Eliminating Distractions
Eliminating distractions to improve your energy and your focus.
Back in March of 2024, I attended the I Can Do It conference by Hay House.
I was eagerly reminiscing about it and someone asked what my biggest takeaways from the event was.
I had to think for a moment because every day was amazing.
My final answer was “eliminate distractions”.
To make it even simpler, it was “no more social media”, my biggest distraction.
Ironically enough, this realization only came to me on the last day of the conference.
During a meditation with Sonia Choquette, my intuition asked me to move my time from '“endless scrolling on social media”, to “anything else”.
This message was further validated by the final speaker of the conference.
Brendon Burchard is a high performance life coach and his books have helped me before, so I knew to pay attention during his keynote.
His first point was how many people suffer from mental fatigue.
You know the feeling, after a long day of work, you just want to sit back on the couch and zone out to some TV.
It’s easier to just open up your phone and scroll endlessly.
(PS, it turns out that scrolling endlessly equates to something like 1400 swipes in an hour!)
The problem with opening up social media is that it actually ends up making the fatigue worse.
In those moments, your mind is making lots of split second decisions.
Do you like the post? Do you share the post? Do you comment? Do you like the person? Do you want to see more? Do you click into the post? Do you swipe past the post? Do you message the person who posted it? Do you screenshot it? Do you save it for later? Do you like the ad? Do you like the product? Where is she? Who’s he dating? How much is that?
What we think is a “relaxing” time is actually adding hundreds of decisions to our brain at the end of the day.
Which only adds to the mental fatigue that we’re already feeling!
And of course social media is designed to keep you going back for more.
It’s literally engineered to tire you out and hold your attention for hours on end.
So after a message from intuition and some quick validation, I decided to eliminate distractions from my life.
Taking Action
The first step was removing the distraction apps from my phone.
I’ll be honest and say that some were easier than others.
I deleted one and moved all the rest off of my home screen.
Then I asked for help.
I asked my partner, my best friend, and my higher self to step in and keep me accountable to my new resolution.
I told them all my plans and that if they caught me jumping on for a few swipes, to call me out on it.
With my partner and my best friend, that’s easy. They already enjoy calling me out on bad behaviors. 😅
My higher self was there to hold me accountable in the alone times, when it would be easy to just open up an app and scroll.
Up the Spiral
For a moment, this just felt like the repeat of a cycle. I’ve done this before.
I’ve given up social media and I’ve committed to staying focused on my business.
I almost let myself get defeated thinking that I would just end up losing again and getting distracted.
I was reminded of the Spiral of Learning and knew that this time was different.
Even if I did end up going back to my distractions, the lessons this time would be new.
The timing of the Universe also had my back.
The day after the conference was a full moon lunar eclipse.
The Divine Timing of the energy could not have been more potent for releasing and eliminating something.
The Results
After one week, I had fast results.
I suddenly gained the energy and the focus to get more done.
I found new motivation to get to bed earlier, to read more, and even to network more.
My focus was stronger and I had new ideas pop up out of nowhere.
I started to cross tasks off my todo list that I’d been procrastinating because they “felt like they took too much energy”.
Of course they did!
It wasn’t that the task was that hard, it was just that I literally had no energy left to complete it.
Social media had been draining all my energy, even while I thought I was recharging.
I planned out all my workshops and activities for the next month and had energy to spare.
And there was another unexpected result.
By choosing to eliminate distractions, my boundaries in all areas got stronger.
Whether it’s a blessing or a curse, I’m a “problem solver” (I lean towards the blessing side most days).
I have a strong energy that tells people I can help fix a problem.
I love problem solving and creating a solution that helps everyone involved.
At work, this can be an issue because everyone comes to me to solve their problems.
This prevents me from focusing on the deep work that helps me to grow the company.
I told more people “no” or “wait” that week than I probably had in the 8 years I’d been there.
And I got further ahead on the projects that I’d been tasked with than I had in months.
When I chose to eliminate distractions, I thought it was just a social media thing, but it grew to include any distraction from my goal.
And that’s exciting.
It’s even more validation that I’m moving in the right direction and building the life of my dreams.
The Takeaway
If you feel like you “never have enough time” to focus on your goals…
Or you feel like you “don’t have the mental energy” to finish your priority list…
Check how much time you’re spending on social media.
Even if you don’t want to eliminate distractions, try cutting your social media time in half.
You don’t have to do something drastic to get powerful results.
If your phone says you’ve been scrolling for 2 hours a day, cut it down to 1.
When you notice your energy increase, you’ll be motivated to cut it down even further.
30 minutes a day, then down to 15, to 0.
Then let me know how much better you feel, how much more you’re accomplishing, and how much more focused you are.
