Self-Prescribing Magic

Give yourself a 90 day boost

Mental & Physical Health

Sometimes we need a little extra help.

When our physical body isn’t quite working, we go to a doctor and they prescribe medicine.

This can be for a temporary infection, emotional regulation, or pain reduction.

When our emotional body isn’t quite working correctly, we go to a different doctor and they can help us sort through all the emotions we might be feeling.

Each doctor’s prescription will be a little different, but in most cases, the instructions will be the same:

Use for 30-90 days and then schedule a followup visit.

Spiritual Help

Now sometimes we might need a little spiritual help and there’s not always a doctor that can help with that.

The solution?

A prescription of your own making.

I first learned this technique from Radleigh Valentine on his HayHouse Radio show. Then in detail when I read his book, How to Be Your Own Genie: Manifesting the Magical Life You Were Born to Live.

Radleigh is the angel expert! I love listening to him give angel prescriptions and how perfectly they are suited to each listener.

I’m not as gifted at Angel-Speak as he is, so I had the divinely inspired idea to try the same thing but with animals.

You can do this one of two ways -

Freehand

Radleigh does this very well. He just knows which angels are the most helpful in every situation.

But when I first started working with animal magic, I didn’t quite have the knowledge base.

By The Cards

So I grabbed an animal oracle deck and went through each of the cards looking for traits or skills that I was wanting some extra help with.

After going through the deck a few times, I selected some finalists and then started to place them into the prescription in front of me.

The technique involves picking 4 different angels. Front left, front right, back left, back right.

The idea being that the ones in front will help to lead you forward, while the ones in back will bring up the rear with some extra protection.

I had chosen Power Animal Oracle Cards by Dr. Steven D. Farmer.

Power Animal Oracle Cards

The final lineup was as follows:

  • Front right - To lead me forward and help with taking action - “Cougar - Confidence”

  • Front left - To help me focus on the correct things - “Eagle - Spirit”

  • Back right - To help me stay committed to the path - “Elephant - Resolve”

  • Back left - To continue to inspire me - “Whale - Soul’s Path”

It felt right, but it didn’t feel complete... So I made a quick little change to the entire spread.

I added a fifth card directly at the top to round it out and to help me tie it all together - “Raven - Magic”

I spent each of the next 90 days meditating with these animals and seeing how they could inspire me in everything I did.

The Results

It was amazing how many times I could lean on my prescription to help me through a situation.

I’d be feeling low energy or like I wanted to quit a project and then I could almost feel the elephant power surging up behind me helping me to push through the obstacle.

I’d be feeling timid or unsure of myself when cougar energy would help me take the next bold confident step forward.

I’d be feeling inept or powerless when a literal raven would cross my path and remind me of all my magic and to own my power.

Like the raven, sometimes it would be a literal animal crossing my path. Or sometimes like the elephant it would be something on social media or a bumper sticker that would trigger the memory.

I was constantly amazed at how quickly the Universe would put one of those 5 animals in my path in some way.

Make it Yours

The best part of the self-prescription is that you can use whatever magic and energy you are most comfortable working with.

For me it was animals - Radleigh teaches with angels.

You could use saints, plants, crystals, deities, or anything else that inspires you.

Even using the Major Arcana of the tarot can have some pretty powerful results.

For that matter, any oracle deck has the right kind of energy for this kind of prescription.

With another variation of the technique, you can rotate the whole prescription so that you have one in front of you, one behind, and one to the right and one to the left.

As always, trust your intuition.

Go with what your gut tells you to do and make any changes necessary.

Adding that fifth card to my first prescription provided a focus to unify all the rest of the energy for me.

Writing Your Prescription

To get started, follow these instructions:

  1. Grab your supplies -

    1. An oracle deck or something similar

    2. Incense/candle (to set the mood)

    3. Notebook (or something to write everything down)

    4. Draw (or print here) the prescription diagram of your choice

  2. Take a few deep breaths and center yourself in the present moment.

  3. Spend a few moments thinking and journaling

    1. Where you are in your journey

    2. What you’re hoping to accomplish

    3. What you're wanting this prescription to help you with.

  4. Review your deck and hand-pick the first round of cards that mean something do you

    1. Don’t limit yourself during this phase, and listen to your intuition.

    2. Pick at least 10 different cards

  5. Lay out all the first-round cards in front of you and start to place where they will go in your prescription.

    1. Again, don’t overthink it, trust your intuition.

    2. Listen for the yes/no in your heart.

  6. Go through another round of cuts and pull out any cards that don’t fit the energy or theme that has developed in your prescription.

  7. Review and make any substitutions that you want.

    1. Maybe you want to add an extra card, maybe you want to remove one.

    2. (Hint: You’re even allowed to double up on one space if that’s what you’re being guided to do.)

  8. Spend a couple moments thanking Source for bringing this to you today.

    1. Appreciation and gratitude are the quickest ways to manifestation.

I like to wrap up and take a picture of the 4 cards so that I can always reference back to it quickly.

Heck, you can even make it your phone wallpaper so you’re reminded of all the support you have every time you pick up your phone.

I also like to leave the 4 cards out some place that I can always see them. Either on my desk or at my altar.

Sometimes looking up to see them cheering me on is exactly the boost I need to keep pushing on.

90 Days

Like a physical prescription, the important part is to remember to take it every day.

Just like you would take an antibiotic every morning, take time to review your prescription and ask for guidance.

The more you commit to it, the stronger your help (and results) will be.

Now try it yourself!

Let me know what deck you used, what styles, and what adjustments you were guided to make.
